Google Scholar Citations Open To All

Google made it open to public now.....it will change the new trends in academic profiling systems (institutional or personal). Google Scholar Citations challenges other competitors such as ResearcherID, Mendeley etc. Google Scholar citations uses their own citation metrics and fetches citation data not only from journal articles, conference proceedings from publishers platforms, but also from institutional and digital repositories, with full-text links. Anyone can now track his or her citations via Google Scholar. The free citation service is “a simple way for authors to compute their citation metrics and track them over time,” the company said. Google Scholar has the advantage relative to Web of Science or Scopus, since it is freely available.

IFLA Conference in San Juan, (Puerto Rico) USA

I have attended the "World Library and Information Congress and 77th General Conference and Assembly" of International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) at San Juan, Puerti Rico (USA) during 12-18 August 2011. You can read the proceedings and papers from program site.

I have been elected to the Standing committee of IFLA Acquisition Colection Development Section and attended its two important meetings. See a group photo here. I am standing 4th from left, with other members of this committee comes from around the world. (Click on the photo for a better view). I have been involved with IFLA since 2002, when I received IFLA-OCLC fellowship. I was previously a Standing Committee member for IFLA Academic research Libraries Section (2004-2009).

1. TERMS: Techniques for electronic resource management

Jill Emery, Collection Development Librarian at Portland State University, and Graham Stone, Information Resources Manager at the University of Huddersfield, through their blog called TERMS: Techniques for ER Management are trying to research around workflow management at the various stages in the life cycle of electronic resources. They will add a new TERM every 2 weeks for interested people to review and comment on each of them. They also encourage any suggestions and tips from your workplace experiences. In this way they hope to crowd source TERMS through open peer commentary with a view to providing a first definitive draft in early 2012. Their plan to keep the TERMS blog live after this date so that TERMS will become a reference point to those who are new to e-resource management and for those who may want to implement its recommendations of best practice.

2. eBook subscription services – are libraries screwed?

Sue Polanka collected several news reports and worrying that, library lending services might be in trouble after the new style of eBooks subscription services, announced by famous Amazon and Macmillan’s new entrant Afictionado etc. Blogger says “I worry about the library perspective because many people who can afford an eBook reader can probably afford a $79 annual subscription for Amazon Prime as well” (and forget libraries!).

3. OCLC and OhioLINK report on book usage patterns in academic libraries

This report is based on a joint study to better understand the usage patterns of books in academic libraries and support further research in these areas. Study incorporated usage data from 2007-2008, was limited to books and manuscripts because these materials typically circulate, and circulation is a significant element in evaluating collections. Our long espoused belief that 80 percent of a library’s circulation is driven by approximately 20 percent of the collection (80/20 rule) is contradicts in this study where it is found that, 80 percent of the circulation is driven by just 6 percent of the collection.

5. Academic E-books – The Shifting Landscape

Leslie Lees, the VP of Content Development for ebrary discussed changes that are occurring with e-books and implications for libraries and their users in InfoViews blog, in 5 series of entries. He says “E-books have brought a sea of new challenges to the fore, but there is also an opportunity for libraries, publishers, and the academy to enhance research capabilities and experiences by using data to enrich selection choices, business models and publication strategies for the benefit of all”.

6. Propositions about the future of academic collections

John M. Jackson in his blog, describes the current and future state of collection development as a paradigm shift: from ownership to access, individual use to social use, content management to knowledge management. This 3 part blog entry ends with Ranganathan’s fifth law “library is a growing organism” and like any organism, it adapts to its environment or it risks extinction.

Ranking Web of World Repositories

Ranking Web of World Repositories just published the latest ranking of January 2009. Check the top 300 World repositories and top 300 Institutional repositories

Among World repositories, IISc from India stands 39th and ISI stands 105th. The leading International Repository in Library and Information Science and Technology called "E-LIS" 19th in the ranking.

Among Institutional repositories from India, IISc repository stands 28th and ISI repository stands 89th.

Methodology:

Using as basis the data from the Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) and The Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpendOAR) the list of repositories is compuled accroding to certain conditions. See more details here about the methodilogy used.

GreyNet's Archive migrates to OpenSIGLE Repository

For the past 15 years, GreyNet has sought to serve researchers and authors in the field of grey literature. To further this end, GreyNet has signed on to the OpenSIGLE Repository and in so doing seeks to preserve and make openly available research results originating in the International Conference Series on Grey Literature. GreyNet together with colleagues at INIST-CNRS have designed the format for a metadata record, which encompasses standardized PDF attachments of the full-text conference preprints, PowerPoint presentations, abstracts and biographical notes. Ex-Google employees unveil a new search engine today out to challenge their former employer: Cuil, pronounced "cool," launches with 120 billion web pages in its index.

Anna Patterson's last Internet search engine was so impressive that industry leader Google Inc. bought the technology in 2004 to upgrade its own system. She believes her latest invention is even more valuable - only this time it's not for sale.

Content analysis: Rather than trying to mimic Google's method of ranking the quantity and quality of links to Web sites, Patterson says Cuil's technology drills into the actual content of a page. And Cuil's results will be presented in a more magazine-like format instead of just a vertical stack of Web links. Cuil's results are displayed with more photos spread horizontally across the page and include sidebars that can be clicked on to learn more about topics related to the original search request. The goals of Bibliomondialis are to promote and encourage the participation of delegates from developing countries in IFLA conferences, to increase participation in national and international library science seminars and to encourage and support research focusing on international library science issues.

To this end, Bibliomondialis is implementing bursary programs for research development and participation in events relating to IFLA.

Eligibility requirements:

In order to be eligible, each applicant must completely satisfy the following criteria and requirements:

hold a diploma from a university or a recognized national library science or information sciences institution, or any other equivalent or relevant diploma, and provide a certified copy of the diploma;

have at least two (2) years' and no more than four (4) years' professional experience in his or her country as a librarian, custodian, information scientist, library technician or documentation technician, or the equivalent, as evidenced by an official letter from his or her employer;

demonstrate and describe in writing in no more than three hundred (300) words his or her professional experience and his or her reasons or interest in this professional area and participation in 2008 WLIC;

include with the application a curriculum vitae of no more than three (3) pages in letter or A4 format, as well as two (2) letters of support or recommendation from persons in authority in a recognized institution that has no immediate hierarchical association with the candidate;

read, understand and speak French or English; hold a passport that is valid for at least six (6) months after his or her entry into Canada, for the 2008 conference, and have received an entry visa if required;

certify that he or she has received written assurance of a financial contribution, stating the value, from another person, business or institution for his or her participation in WLIC;

undertake to provide no later than two (2) months after the conference a written report summarizing his or her participation.

Registration period: October 2007 to January 2008
Application submission deadline: January 31, 2008
Application assessment procedure: February and March 2008
Announcement of recipients: April 2008

SLA Marion E Sparks Award for Professional Development

The Chemistry Division of the Special Libraries Association is sponsoring a student/new member scholarship essay competition in 2007. The award is named to honor Marion E. Sparks, a chemistry librarian at the University of Illinois from 1913 until her death in 1929. Ms. Sparks contributed a great deal to the field of chemical information, her achievements include teaching courses on chemical information, and authoring and publishing what is argued to be the first book to formally address chemical literature and libraryinstruction.

AWARD: AWARD: The winner will receive $1,500 to attend the 2007 SLA Annual Conference June 3-6 in Denver, CO. The winner will also receive a certificate of achievement and will be introduced at the Chemistry Division Business Meeting & Breakfast. This award is intended to reimburse the winner’s expenses for attending the convention, including: registration, airfare, lodging, food and/or the continuing education course (registration in one of the Chemistry division CE courses — “Chemistry for the Non-Chemist Librarian” or “Chemical Information Sources, Requests, and Reference”, or any other continuing education course is recommended but not required).

ELIGIBILITY: All student members of the Chemistry Division and all individuals who became members of the Chemistry Division since January 2006 are eligible to enter the contest. Preference will be given to library school students and recent MLIS graduates.

ASIST SIG-III 2007 INTERNATIONAL PAPER CONTEST

The American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T), International Information Issues Special Interest Group (SIG-III), is pleased to announce its eighth competition for papers to be submitted for the 2007 Annual Meeting, which will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, October 18-25, 2007.

The theme of this paper contest is: "Joining Research and Practice: Social Computing and Information Science"

The theme may be addressed at either the country or regional level issues. Papers could discuss issues, policies and case studies on specific aspects of the theme, such as, but not limited to the following:

- Egovernance in developing countries, Factors, issues, case studies etc pertaining to rural/urban digital divide and the information infrastructure (connectivity, access, hardware, cost implications, emerging trends etc.) in developing countries.

-Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and digital libraries – Collecting, preserving and disseminating IK.

My Professional Visit to German Libraries

German Goethe Institute and Bibliothek and Information International provided me financial support to undertake a 2 weeks professional visit to German Libraries during August 2006. I visited selected Libraries from Hannover, Gottingen, Kiel, Cologne, Hiedelberg and Frankfurt. ASIST InfoShare Student Membership Award 2007

The ASIS&T International Information Issues Special Interest Group (SIG III) is pleased to announce that for 2007 they will be able to sponsor a group of deserving information science PhD and Masters students who STUDY and RESIDE in developing countries for complimentary ASIS&T memberships.

SIG III solicit nominations of student candidates for the InfoShare Student Membership Award. Please send recommendations of deserving students to Vika Kravchyna (vika.kravchyna@arius3d.com ). Please include a Curriculum Vitae (or equivalent) and a brief description of why this person is deserving of membership, including their willingness to promote ASIS&T within their networks. Awardees will be decided by a vote of the SIG III officers at the end of 2006.Each membership award will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year if the new member proves to be a strong advocate for ASIS&T in their home country during the course of the year.

ICDIM - IEEE International Conference on Digital Information Management

The ever First IEEE International Conference on Digital Information Management - ICDIM will be organised by Digital Information Research Foundation (DIRF) at Christ College, Bangalore, INDIA during 6-8 December 2006. This is the first of its kind in India, as a multidisciplinary conference on digital information management, science and technology. There will be several Workshops and Tutorials being organised as a part of this conference.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Hess from University of Munich, Antony Satyadas from IBM USA, Prof. Ajith Abraham from Chung-Ang University Seoul and Prof. Charles A. SHONIREGUN from University of East London will be the Plenary Speakers of ICDIM.

ICDIM Program Chair Dr. P. Pichappan from DLIS, Annamalai University (DIRF President and Editor of JDIM) reports that there are around 95 papers accepted for presentation, out of 225 submissions. The papers of the ICDIM will be published by IEEE and are indexed in IEEE Xplore, INSPEC, COMPENDEX and many other databases. From this year, papers are likely to be indexed by Science Citation Index also. The team under his guidance are working hard to make ICDIM a grand success. Attending this conference is going to be an entirely different experience for professionals and researchers.

The second ICDIM will be held during December 11-13, 2007 at Lyon, France. Besides the university at Lyon, it is likely to be co-sponosored by Munich University, Germany and Institute of Knowledge Sharing, Denmark.

Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE)

Scientific literature offered free to developing countries (ACCESS Newsletter of iGroup Reports.........................

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation gave USD250,000 to Yale to help establish Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE), a digital internet library for developing countries.

OARE will provide access to peer-reviewed scientific literature of leading international publishing houses. Organizations eligible to use OARE include approximately 1,000 public, non-profit institutions in more than 100 underdeveloped nations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. Literature in environmental chemistry, economics, law and policy, and other environmental subjects such as botany, conservation biology, ecology and zoology will be available through a portal presented in world languages including Arabic, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Yale's OARE activities will be directed by Oswald Schmitz, Professor of population and community ecology and Associate Dean of academic affairs at the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES), and Ann Okerson, Associate University Librarian for collections and international programs.

Middle level professionals and technical specialists (computing staff) working in libraries/information centres in Asia and Oceania may apply. The candidates must be less than 46 years old. They must have an undergraduate degree and basic IT skills. The scholarship will enable the recipient to gain experience and hands-on exposure in a professionally advanced environment at a recognized institution in Asia and Oceania. The scholarship period will not exceed six weeks.

In addition to economy class return airfare, the recipient will be given a moderate per diem allowance to cover meals and accommodation.

India Goverment Blocking BLOGs

Bangalore: Thousands of Internet users in India have been unable to access blogs (or Web logs) since the weekend.

Throughout Monday, angry customers of almost all major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the country exchanged mails and flooded user group sites with postings to report that blogs, created using the free space provided by Web services like Geocities, Typepad and Blogspot (a Google initiative), could not be opened. Many were told that the blog sites had been blocked in response to a directive from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

CERT-IN's Director, Dr Gulshan Rai, said he was unaware of the problem and would not be able to respond "off-hand". In a telephone interview, he told this reporter, "Somebody must have blocked some sites. What is your problem?"

US-India Summit on Education, Research and Technology

On May 31, 2006 the California Institute for Telecommunications and
Information Technology (Calit2) hosted, on behalf of the University of
California, a U.S.-India Summit on Education, Research & Technology in
San Diego. The invitation-only meeting brought together 150 distinguished
participants from industry, academia, government and non-governmental
organizations in the U.S. and India to identify new areas of collaboration
between the two countries in high-tech education and research.

The U.S.-India Summit arose from a series of agreements involving institutions
from both countries. In 2005 twenty American universities signed a
memorandum of understanding to collaborate on distance engineering
education with Amrita University and other Indian institutions, The University of
California signed a subsequent agreement in March 2006 to promote
research collaborations with Amrita and other Indian universities, and
Indian science and technology agencies.The Indo-U.S. Science and
Technology Forum will play an essential role in promoting and facilitating
the collaborative research activities arising from the UC-India agreement.

Telephone Reference Service

Library Reference Service changed a lot, along with aall other Library services, to survive the Internet. Here is a story of TelRef (Telephone Reference Service) of New York Public Library appeared in New York Times newspaper.

Harriet Shalat, the chief of the service, heard questions like Why, in the age of search engines, would anyone bedevil a human being with such questions? And what human being would choose to be so bedeviled?

She replies "We are detectives," she said. "We know more than people think we know. We're not little old ladies stamping books and telling you to be quiet."

Paul Duguid, an adjunct professor at the School of Information at the University of California at Berkeley, said there would always be a place for such human search engines."If you have a good search question, Google is great for answering it," Mr. Duguid said. "If you don't have a good question, you will get 17 million responses and you will wish you hadn't asked."

So, still there are avenues??
